This past week was crazy busy at my school. It was National Lutheran Schools Week and we had
tons of fun activities going on all week.
MONDAY: PJ Day
Pajama day is by far one of my favorite dress up days. There is nothing better than being able to wear your PJs to school. On Monday, the students were able to watch a movie in the gym. K-3 watched Madegascar 3. It was the first time my co-op and I had seen the movie. We both decided it was pretty cute. My students LOVED it. One of my little boys started dancing and singing to Firework by Katy Perry at the end of the movie. My co-op and I got a good chuckle out of it. It was an exciting beginning to our week and let me tell you the children were extremely excited and chatty the rest of the day. I picked up teaching math this week and let me tell you, they were a little out of control since math was directly after watching the movie.
TUESDAY: Twin Day
I was twins with my co-op this day. We decided to be nerds and man oh man everyone loved it. Two of the boys in kindergarten decided to be nerds also. It was pretty cute. They had their little nerd glasses like we did and it was adorable. Our fun activity for Tuesday, was going to Jumping Country, which if you don't know is a place full of those blow-up jumping things. All of the teachers (K-2) were a little nervous of how our time at Jumping Country would be, but actually it went pretty smoothly. We only had one issue for the 2 hours we were there. This day was perfect because the students were so warn out from jumping that the rest of the day was a breeze. I'm not putting a picture up of my nerd day just because we took being nerds a little too far and it's only slightly embarrassing so I'll just give you this picture of a nerd.
WEDNESDAY: Crazy Hair/Mismatch Day
I forgot to take a picture on Wednesday of my mismatching outfit and hair. I dyed the ends of my hair purple which looked cute. Then I had on mismatched socks, polka dot shorts on over my jeans. A maroon CUC shirt with a patterned hoodie underneath. It looked terrible, but I guess that's the point of mismatched day. My students loved this day, especially the crazy hair part. I had one boy come in with a full Mohawk and he has longer hair too. It was super cute. Another little boy dyed his hair red and put blue spots in it. And another boy dyed his hair blue and green with a faux hawk. Everyone looked so cute. On Wednesday there was a magician...his name was Mr. Fun. All of the teachers now make fun of him. He was the worst magician we've ever seen. There was absolutely no magic done and you could see him moving his hands while he was supposed to be doing his tricks. It was terrible. The teachers all decided that we should incorporate his magic into our days since he made it so easy that we could be magicians too. Oh man...Mr. Fun will never be forgotten by the staff. But my students since they are kindergarteners liked it. They thought his tricks were cool and wondered how he did them.
THURSDAY: Famous Person Day
Thursday was a day where we could dress like any famous person. I chose to throw on my Clay Matthews jersey and call it a day. A kindergarten boy was my Aaron Rodgers and one of the first grade teachers was my Donald Driver. It was perfect. My co-op dressed like Miss Frizzle. It was real cute. Other famous people in my class included: Prince Caspian, Brandon Jennings (of the Bucks), Amelia Earhart, Rapunzel, Pocahontas, and Ryan Braun. The fun activity for today was a talent show. There were so many talented students in the show. We had everything from a glow stick dance to singing to an elk call. The highlight of everyone's day was the end of the talent show when the teachers surprised the student body by putting on choir robes and lip syncing to "I Will Follow Him" from the Sister Act. We had choreographed it the night before after school when all the teachers were called to a "meeting." We all had so much fun goofing off and lip syncing this song. We laughed through a lot of our rehearsal, but we pulled it together when we were on stage. The students were busting up laughing and we received a standing ovation.
FRIDAY: Color Day
Friday was color day....and what color did kindergarten get??? PLAID, but wait that's not a color...it's a pattern. I know, but kindergarten got the unfortunate happenings of having plaid. But it gave me the excuse to once again wear PJs to school. All of my students participated in this day. I was surprised that they all came in wearing plaid since it's not something everyone has in their closet. My supervisor came to observe me for the first time while I was teaching math on Friday. I wasn't nervous for her to come, but I was nervous about how my students would act because of it being National Lutheran Schools Week. They had been a little crazy all week, but they behaved really well and I was proud of them. My supervisor liked my lesson and she liked what I was doing in the classroom so this is good. She gave me a couple ideas of things I could try in the classroom if I wanted to try using them. She is full of resources and she is more than willing to share anything with me. It's great. In the afternoon on Friday, we had the Rainbow Olympics. Each grade had 10 players and Kindergarten made it through the second round, which was rock paper scissors. Overall, the 7th grade (in pink) won the Rainbow Olympics with 2nd grade (in green) coming in 2nd.
Some of my favorite quotes of the week were:
"I had a wrestling match and I lost. I got banged up because I was looking around the room and lost focus."-- this coming from the child in the classroom who is easily off task.
"When my mom was young, she was chased by a muskrat."-- I have no idea what this conversation was about. This is the only part I overheard.
(A student to my co-op) "Is Miss Abel a real teacher now?"-- I was leading the class up to the cafeteria.
Overall it was a great week and it showed me the craziness of National Lutheran Schools Week.
